Tips For Meeting Women #2: Use Killer Profile Pics
Quick, what’s the first thing you notice about a girl’s online profile?
It could be one of three things, depending on how a site is structured. Some sites will show you the girl’s age first, some will show you her location, and MOST will show you her picture.
That’s because websites know that the visual cortex in a man’s brain is specifically programmed to react strongly to visual images—even the silhouette of a woman is enough to get the male brain thinking about sex (or what do you think those mudflap silhouettes are all about?).
Profile pictures are hugely important.
You might have the best-written profile in the world (if not, read our guide to creating a great online profile). If your picture is terrible, you’re not going to get laid on these websites.
The NUMBER ONE rule of choosing a photo to upload to a dating site online is very easy: Don’t send a picture of your junk.
There are a lot of guys who believe for some reason that girls on dating sites want to see pictures of their junk. This is incorrect. Girls do not want to see pictures of your junk. Girls you don’t know do not want to see pictures of your junk. Girls you’re dating probably do not want to see pictures of your junk.
It’s not your junk, it’s her. It’s a girl thing. They don’t care about pictures of your junk.
Hopefully, your dick isn’t the only thing you have going for you.
Instead of sending her a picture of something she’s going to wind up seeing anyway, stand out from the crowd in a good way. Put up a classy or awesome picture as your main picture.
Dos and Don’ts of Your Profile Picture
DO: Put up a picture of yourself doing an awesome activity. This lets her know that (guess what?) you’re the kind of guy who likes to do awesome activities. The ones we’ve found that work the best on girls are hoseback riding, playing with dogs (puppies in particular), and surfing. While you might not own a sailboat or a Thoroughbred, we’re pretty sure you can find someone who’ll let you hold a dog for ten seconds while you take a picture.
DON’T: Put up a face-only picture. Face-only pictures make it look like you have something to hide. To top of the icing on the really pretty bad cake, they are also usually pretty unattractive. Zooming in so far emphasizes your worst qualities and makes you look a lot less good-looking than you are.
DO: Put up a bunch of awesome secondary pictures. While your first picture should be enough to get you in the door, girls need to look at the other ones involved to seal the deal. The other ones should also be of you in interesting places, though you don’t have to go out and buy a windsurfer just for those. In fact, use pictures of the things you actually enjoy, whether that’s sitting at home with a book or fixing classic cars or even playing video games.
A lot of guys think that the best way to get laid is to try and appeal to everyone. However, studies conducted over a trend of 500,000 people signed up on OkCupid show that your profile will actually get the most hits and messages if you emphasize the things you like least about yourself.
For example, a lot of guys don’t have big muscles, so they try to hide that by wearing big clothes or zooming the camera in to their faces.
However, if you don’t have big muscles and you do a nice full-body shot of you doing something you love, two things happen.
First, the girl that actually does respond to you will do it BECAUSE she likes your specific type. Believe it or not, not all girls like the same kinds of guys. Not every girl wants to go home with Ryan Gosling or whoever. Some of them like guys with a little extra squish, just like some guys like girls with all different sized tits (like some guys like big tits, some like small tits…we’re not saying that a lot of guys like girls with one huge one and one tiny one. Unless you’re into that.).
DON’T: Take a bad quality picture.
A survey of eHarmony users found that the camera equipment you use to take your profile picture drastically impacts what kind of response you get from the girls on the website.
For instance, pictures taken with a crappy cell phone camera performed almost 10 percent under point-and-shoot cameras, which performed about 5 percent under actual professional cameras.
Photographic equipment matters. If you don’t think so, think about how it seems to girls: do you want to be the guy that’s put together and has the coolest gadgets, or one who just uses whatever’s available? It might not seem important, but those kinds of things matter to girls. If you don’t have a great camera, it might be worth it to get at least one shot of yourself snapped by a friend who does. You’ll be thanking us for it when you’re getting laid.
